March 3rd: A fictional character you'd like to switch places with
Ooohhh what a juicy prompt! I can't begin to even recount the amount of intriguing fictional characters I have come across in all my years as an avid reader and movie-watcher, not to mind select just one with whom to switch places. Do I delve into fantastical worlds of make-believe, or choose someone who has a unique and fun way of navigating through the obstacles of real life as I know it? Do I opt for a male energy or a female energy? A youthful character or someone who has stood the tests of time? Human being or beast? Someone who mirrors me in every way or who totally deflects from my personality?
After much deliberation and consideration on what is clearly a matter of life and death, I am going to plump for is, surprisingly, Serena van der Woodsen from the TV series Gossip Girl. This may seem so basic and mainstream, but she was one of the first to pop in to my head, and I know exactly why.
I visited New York City on holiday at the age of 23, and fell in love with it. Imagine being a rich, well-dressed, beautiful it-girl living on Manhattan's Upper East Side with access to limos, VIP entry to clubs, and gorgeous summer houses in places like Santorini and the Hamptons. What's not to like? Getting to wake up in the hustle and bustle of NYC every day and go for brunch in a classy 5th Avenue café with my best friends while we dish the goss from last night's rager sesh has to literally be my dream.
Now, as a series, Gossip Girl is fairly run-of-the-mill and predictable with some plot flaws, but this is not a TV show review. Do I want to parade the streets of New York dressed head to toe in designer gear getting up to all sorts? Yes. Do I want to holiday in a villa that has servants, a pool, and a walk-in wardrobe the size of my rental house in Cork? Yes. Do I mind that Gossip Girl lurks close by watching my every move and waiting for me to fail? Yes. In fact, it nourishes my ego to the point that I'm sitting here wondering how feasible it actually is to go from public servant nerd of Kerry to wealthy popular queen of the Big Apple.
